New Beginnings

Phew. Finally I am able to begin a new era! An era free of facebook addiction.

OHHHH the insanity! I just cannot believe how much I multitask when on the computer. Or when I'm with friends. Then I don't even pay attention to what they're saying! So many times we're distracted by the little things... like the little fish noises Skype makes. Or the television. TVs in restaurants bother the crap out of me! Especially the ones that are everywhere, it's so hard for me to focus. But, it's no time to rant.

Though I have so many things to do, I feel exhilerated. Exhilerated to learn? Perhaps. Although a film take home exam is not very inspiring. That class is not inspiring which saddens me because last year I loved my film class. We watched interesting films and my teaching assistant rocked. This year we watch films that can be compared to dry bread. Minus "Rambo: First Blood Part II." Hahaha, if you have a chance watch it... it oozes cheese.

Megan and Vinny came down for the weekend last weekend which was lovely. I MADE food. Amazing, isn't it? I'm going to list what I made because I'm proud. Hutspot (sp?) which are Dutch mashed potatoes made with carrots and nutmeg. Then for V-day I made Vingtcent his favorite meal - ceasar salad (I made lettuce! :P ), garlic bread, spaghetti sauce that was pretty much homemade minus the Classico sauce, AND homemade cheesecake (thanks to Ains and Meg). Yep, AND I made homemade Cream of Broccoli soup that everyone really enjoyed. Martha Stewart should be scared.

Megone introduced me to this podcast show called Spark which can be found at this location. It's a very interesting show and it made me realize how much I truly miss radio. Maybe it's me majoring in Communications, but more and more, I realize how isolated we are from everything. At least with radio, we feel connected. We can call in, request a song, and 5 minutes later hear "Smells like teen spirit" and know that you were the reason for this. Also, I want radio dramas to be brought back. Once, while my family and I were on a Sunday drive, we heard a radio drama and it was awesome to construct everything in your mind while watching the nature whiz by. I truly hope radio stays alive...

Something to think about...
Do people really use their imagination anymore
or is everything imagined for them? I feel like I've lost so much of my imagination and now I have to work to find it. The more I learn about technology, the more I find myself craving a society that does not rely so much on technology. I think it'd be so great if we just started relying on ourselves more, on the food WE make. People would perhaps realize what actually goes into their food and who the faces are behind the labour. If you're bored and intrigued here's an interesting video we watched in my Information and Technology class. Keep in mind, all films are made with a bias but there are some things that cannot be made up.

What do you think? Do you believe that everything is imagined for people or no? Comment and let me know, I'd love to hear feedback. :)

Peace

  2. so i got to this by reading your note about canceling facebook and i must say i agree. on many levels.
i hate what facebook has become and how i can't stop using it.
i also am considering canceling mine.
i am also a communications major and so maybe it is that but i feel like everyone has become so isolated and technology is involved in a lot of it.
nothing seems to have as much value anymore.
i have many things to say on this topic but i agree with you on this!

  3. Even tough I work in computer science, I agree with you - we rely too much on technology and it's used so we can be more efficient instead that complementing our lives.

As for imagination, as long as we have our right brain, we will have creativity! The trick is to train your brain! In Europe, school teaches how to do mind maps while in america nobody does that. It's loads of fun and you find lots of unexpected ideas. You should try it!

  4. GEN! I am not going to say who this is until the end and you can guess until then and see if you're right. Though what I'm about to say may give it away in an instant, hahahah. I wanted to get rid of facebook too because it's something that has made relations between people rather impersonal, amongst other things of course, but facebook is a pretty big player. Alas, some people and groups cannot be reached save for facebook so I had to stay on *tear*. Bon, anyway, the food sounds good.

Radio as you mention also sounds interesting. I find myself listening to certain podcasts which in essence are like radio-shows and they're nice! It sorta brings back your imagination because much is left to you =). Have you ever heard of the show Radio Free Roscoe (sp). It was a disney show, hahah but I really liked it and the idea of it. That's what your radio comments made me think of. Blogs are fun to read, especially blog's of super awesome people! I'm going to follow you; ie, blog-stalk! hohohoho

    Santa.

  5. I think the main reason facebook works is that it makes things easier, its easy to plan a gathering of any kind with facebook, you don't have to call 30 people and explain repeatedly the same thing, then keep track of it, and for SOME of us who live at night, it really genuinely IS difficult to maintain contact with our friends.

That being said, of course its a crutch. But its a pretty shiny crutch.

THAT being said, as we find a hundred new ways to make our lives easier, we give up the yearning to BE creative, we are able to sit and watch silly memes online and forget that we have the ability to create, to go out and do things and make things and experience things. Instead we watch the experiences of others as a poor but exponentially easier substitute.

And it protects us. Should we go on the big mountain climb? What if we fail, I know, lets watch a movie about it instead. Should I try to paint, or just watch other people do it..? Our fear of failure grows as we realize that we aren't the potential astronauts and doctors and so on, hell, we might not even be real individuals, so we become too afraid to even try, lest our failure be the thing that separates us and gives us our identity. And so we avoid real life, we jump into the warm embrace of facebook where all are welcome. We pretend to have experiences by watching others do it themselves, and our capacity to actually BE creative diminishes. And while I do believe some people are inherently more creative, or at least its easier for them, I think its a skill, something that can be cultivated and practiced and enjoyed as it develops into something more, but on the other side of the coin, its something we can lose, something we can forget we had, and as a skill, something that will diminish and eventually fade.

Its a choice I think. A choice to go out and do the things you want, whether it means letting go of facebook and its holy blueness so that you have the time and the freedom to experience it, or to juggle both and hope for the best ;)

As long as you choose to choose for yourself... All will be well.

    Adieu, Matthieu

An article I just now found. It relates to the "unplugging" idea.

To comment on your last paragraph, Gen: People have become lazy, so lazy that they are becoming mindless. A great story came out in the last few years, "The Kite Runner". I have the option to either read the book or watch the movie- since it's already out. I could watch the movie and see how someone else imagined the story or I could read the book and imagine in myself. I find that when I don't do things that are creative for a while, it feels like I am using a rusty part of my brain. I think that people are becoming mindless. Unable to think for themselves. And very susceptible to being controlled by the media.
